All Monaco help files which a wikia staff member redirected recreated here

I asked admin air777 to ask the shoutwiki staff to upload the Monaco help files which a wikia staff member redirected on wikia:

I think it would be a good idea to have a home for these here.

The Club Penguin Wiki Network would gladly help out. Just let us know. We'll set up a site. Power to the People! (MAKE a effort) 01:10, 17 December 2010 (UTC)
Update: an shoutwiki admin wrote:
We won't be importing the old help pages used by Wikia, we'll instead write our own help pages as soon as time permits. Some of the images aren't necessary either (Wikia logo comes to mind) and I have the header button images on my laptop.
This is incredibly unrealistic and I don't think it will happen anytime soon, if ever.
So we should probably just continue to transfer the pages here.   —Anno1404 (talkcontribs) Admin.svg 15:42, 29 December 2010 (UTC)

I am planning on sending this out to the 43 former wikias which left later tonight, if you have anything you would like to add be bold and add it, or have any suggestions, please let me know. Anno1404 22:07, 17 December 2010 (UTC)

I am a former (prior to being banned) Admin from the Talisman Online Wiki on Wikia, which successfully moved to (along with Wowpedia, GWiki, and PVX Wiki). While I understand your reasoning to a point, there also comes a time where you have to say enough is enough. Wikia has shot itself in the foot with this change. They have lost their credibility with most major gaming companies, so I would guess that the Gaming branch of Wikia will continue to see a decline. The remaining wikis on Wikia will either adapt to the changes that Wikia has forced, or they will also fork to other hosts. The loss of WoWWiki's community, as well as the backing from Blizzard was a major blow to Wikia, and I believe it will not be the last as more of the larger wikis get fed up and leave. For myself however, there is no further planned involvement with Wikia, I am happy with the move to Curse, and am focusing on continuing the work on the Talisman Online Wiki, and I'm sure that Talisman Online@Wikia will simply fade into the obscurity that it enjoyed prior to my adoption of the site. Like Blizzard, Miracle Castle (the publisher of Talisman Online) has fully supported our move and corrected the fansite links on their website. I do not see any need to further campaign against Wikia, their bottom line will show the rewards of their callous treatment of their volunteer communities one way or another and my time and energy is better spent supporting my community (tiny though it is) as well as providing support for other wikis (I am now a contracted member of the team). I wish you all luck but would seriously recommend you do the same... focus on supporting your communities wherever they are, and let Wikia continue to dig it's own grave. --Wynthyst 08:18, 18 December 2010 (UTC)

Thank you for visiting and taking the time to comment.
A lot of editors still want to leave and are in the process of building their wikis on their own. The founders of this alliance were wise enough to foresee the need for a list of departing wikias who could help each other. At this point, I see this site as a way to help departing wikias and give advice and viable options to those who still want to leave.
I am very thankful for this site, long after wikia was instituted and I was indefinitely banned, I found out about the new monaco skin available to wikis, and because of this, we are able to work together too merge two former wikias into one.
I respect your desire to focus your energies on building your site alone. I hope you can see the merits of some editors wanting to expand that circle of assistance, to help other communities too.
I will let you focus solely on building your site, and will not post future newsletters on your site.
Congratulations on your move. Visiting your site I noticed it is one of the best designed sites, in the top three. I only wish your community the best. Anno1404 08:34, 18 December 2010 (UTC)
Thank you for the compliment on our site, and should other gaming wikis be looking for a new home on a full blown gaming network, they should feel free to contact me. My above comments were meant more as a caution to you and your alliance against taking further steps to intentionally disrupt Wikia (the inclusion of the code in the newsletter that you admit will get you banned on wikia). It really serves little purpose. I do applaud your wish to be a resource of advice and support to other communities considering a move from Wikia. My suggestion would be to use other means (email where available) to contact the leaders of those communities who are voicing their concerns about wikia and beginning discussions regarding the possibilities of leaving. Continuing to monitor the status of the wikias that have been "left" by their communities only furthers to strengthen their numbers, rather than allowing them to fall into disrepair and eventual obscurity. It's clear that Wikia's position and policy has changed greatly since Jimmy Wales' interview that you quoted in the newsletter and it is also clear to me that they will actually consider legal action against people they believe are intentionally trying to "damage" them since they have no intention of allowing anyone to "take their content with them when they leave". Or rather you can take a copy of it, but you have to leave the original behind. I'm just suggesting caution. As for the "rest" of my community.. it consists of 3 friends of mine and me. I don't believe for a second that Wikia cares one wit that we left, and they have 1800 more pages about the game Talisman Online than they did when I started, but that's all they will ever have. --Wynthyst 15:23, 18 December 2010 (UTC)
Excellent points, you seem like a really good admin, I will take your great advice to heart sir. Anno1404 19:42, 18 December 2010 (UTC)
I support Wyn's comment: the new changes are no longer new — those who are willing to stay and adapt are doing so; those unwilling to suffer have moved or are trying to do so. The biggest weapon in AWA's arsenal is to make it easy for those groups to find a new home, move their data, and get their new site into shape. Any energy spent dissing Wikia takes time away from Allies in the alliance. 20:44, 20 December 2010 (UTC)
I agree, thus the newsletter. We have been actively working to help editors find that new home. I got indefinitely banned, not for dissing wikia, but for letting communities know that shoutwiki has wikia, giving editors an alternative.
RE: "it is also clear to me that they will actually consider legal action against people they believe are intentionally trying to "damage" them"
Wow, any examples? If you come across them, I would be very interested.
it is heartening to see over a month since the new skin, and communities continue to leave. Anno1404 20:55, 20 December 2010 (UTC)

Incorrect info

The information you have on the alternative wiki hosts seem wrong?

It also seems biased towards shoutwiki. I guess that's okay seeing as this wiki is hosted there, but please don't disparage other hosts unnecessarily.

eg, Wikkii is not 1GB space, its unlimited. And not 10GB bandwidth, it's unlimited.

You also say about Wikkii "First edit on the wiki main page was only in June 2009, so may not be there in the long term. (Many of these sites don't last)"

But you also recommend Shoutwiki which was started April 2009, a whole TWO MONTHS before. That doesn't make sense.

And what about these really big wiki hosts you don't list, like,,,, They all have been around for AGES compared to Shoutwiki and Wikkii but you don't suggest them.

you can add all of that information --including warning about shoutwiki too. We welcome it. Anno1404 05:28, 21 December 2010 (UTC)
We can add the info from Perhaps we can also add the info about the MW version used. AWAMember (Talk page, Mail me). 19:12, 21 December 2010 (UTC)

Removing ShoutWiki's recommended status

Unfortunately, I feel like I have to remove ShoutWiki's recommended status here. The frequent down times and the extremely slow load speeds made me drop it from "recommended" to 3 stars.

Ironically, I would have done this a couple of days ago, but the site was so slow, I was unable to change it.

As this is a wiki, anyone is welcome to revert my changes. But please explain here why. I hope things change soon, so we can re-recommend the site. I will continue to monitor this site.   —Anno1404 (talkcontribs) Admin.svg 15:49, 29 December 2010 (UTC)

The downtimes and slow load speeds are over, 5 years later, so I've changed it to 5 stars. --Stranger195 (talk), 12:53, 17 August 2015 (UTC)

I have been working with shoutwiki for around 2 months to start moving my wikia wikis after seeing the recommendations here. Shoutwiki's customer service started strong, but in the past month I have had the majority of my help requests go unanswered, including one issue spanning weeks where I couldn't log into their site or my wiki site at all. After finally trying to transfer my wiki, the '10 minute process' is still pending after two weeks. QQ (talk) 21:18, 20 May 2017 (UTC)

From this I would guess you've got multiple email addresses or accounts, because the first ticket I can find from your account was opened this month (May). --Lewis Cawte (talk) ShoutWiki Staff 07:02, 30 May 2017 (UTC)
Why multiple accounts result in no response at all to a help request? If my request was not one that you could process due to account mismatch, is it standard practice to completely ignore it? Why not simply explain that my account didn't have permissions instead of leaving me in limbo?
Regardless though, I do have an unsolved email chain and an unanswered wiki migration request from shoutwiki, all under the same email address. My help requests from the previous month were posted on the ShoutWiki forum, where I got a quick reply, and was very optimistic about hosting with you. However, when new problems arose in May, my forum help requests went unanswered for weeks and one not at all. I attempted the shoutwiki irc, which was also ignored, even though a staff member told me later that they did see me drop in for help (timezone issue, but why wasn't there a follow up???). The email support I received after weeks was along the same lines as your response above, which seems to assume I have done something wrong without offering support. I cannot recommend shoutwiki, and do not believe my rating edits should be reverted. QQ (talk) 21:34, 31 May 2017 (UTC)
My apologies, this reply got lost in the emails about every action I have to receive on this site (due to the number of times I've received communications from general councils of various organisations.)
Please re-read my response. I pulled all your ticket data that I could find using the email you've got connected to your account. The "10 minute process" was started two days prior to you posting here. And where did that "10 minute process" claim come from? If it's from Hub, we clearly need to rework that page as well.
You mention some "forum help requests" ... I see 0 edits to Hub's forum namespace from your account, not that it's really a place to get help from staff. I'm guessing I've found the IP you used to log these forum requests. Yes, you're correct, there's not a reply to one of these. We did however, answer it when we spotted it filed as a ticket later. It is widely stated, we're volunteers, all of our team work or study and have other real world commitments. We're never going to have the best reply times, and we can't deal with everything (which is why things like the Hub forum are there). There's actually quite a lot of behind the scenes work we're trying to sort this year to improve the site, oh, and be in compliance with various laws.
The IRC incident - who knows. I don't remember who this was, could have been me, but see ^ re: busy-ness. In an ideal world, we would have tried to follow up, without pulling specifics on this situation, I can say IRC is often hard to follow up on due to people using different usernames, etc. If you're after the level of support you seem to expect, I'd suggest you go back to a wikifarm run by a company with an extensive community support team, like Wikia or go to a smaller farm which has time to give that attention to detail. We'll get there one day, but that's not today, or tomorrow unfortunately.
I reverted your edits to the main page because I don't believe your rating is balanced or rational. I'm not against our rating being lowered. We're aware there is plenty we need to work on, but when you do it, you do it with the consideration of other people's experiences. If you want to use our platform to launch an unbalanced attack on us, especially when it is purely based on your experiences with one aspect of the site, you can't expect us not to try to balance your points.
--Lewis Cawte (talk) ShoutWiki Staff 08:12, 12 June 2017 (UTC)
After reading that, if for whatever reason, you still feel you want your wiki imported to ShoutWiki, please provide a link to an XML dump in the ticket for this. We're going to have a whole team session later of clearing the backlog of tickets that's built up recently (as unfortunatly, happens too often) --Lewis Cawte (talk) ShoutWiki Staff 08:20, 12 June 2017 (UTC)
Yeah my support tickets haven't been getting any answers either. I'd recommend Referata if you want a quality wiki farm. --Can I drink this?Do you want to EXPLODE!? 20:51, 29 May 2017 (UTC)
Well I haven't even seen a support ticket from you so it'd be hard for someone to answer it if it doesn't even exist... --Lewis Cawte (talk) ShoutWiki Staff 06:51, 30 May 2017 (UTC)
That's weird, I could've sworn I sent a couple emails to just this year. --Can I drink this?Do you want to EXPLODE!? 19:38, 31 May 2017 (UTC)
We've received one from the email address linked to your account. It was actioned and replied to within two days. If you disagree, have a look through your emails and find the ticket numbers provided by the system's auto reply and email them to and I'll look into the situation. --Lewis Cawte (talk) ShoutWiki Staff 08:12, 12 June 2017 (UTC)

Wikia's view page numbers

From :

To the people looking, the metric to watch on quantcast is pageviews per person, ideally per week or per month; it measures the extent to which Wikia can get people to return and the extent to which it relies on new traffic via search engines etc.; those numbers are falling. (You can also use these numbers to estimate the "quality" of a wiki.) Since the stated goal of the new skin was to get new readers to stay on longer, from those numbers the skin has failed; it's a bit hard to tell because many active editors leaving Wikia would naturally also cause the average to drop. Wikia monitors other metrics via other tracking services, so they probably know more than we do, but apparently don't tell. --◄mendel► 06:57, December 12, 2010 (UTC)
The main other one we use is Google Analytics (and I'm very much hoping that they will be displayed publicly on wikis in the future -- but that's a preliminary project and it's probably too soon to even mention it right now ;) -- Sannse@Wikia (help forum | blog) 05:32, December 16, 2010 (UTC)

According to quantcast, since the new skin it looks like wikias page views are flat at best. The sharp drop in late December gave me pause, then I realized it was probably because of Christmas, and their was a similar sharp drop the year before.

What is interesting is what accounts for the spikes? I think one is the release of Fallout New Vegas.   —Anno1404 (talkcontribs) Admin.svg 16:38, 29 December 2010 (UTC)

Galleries showing pictures without file: like wikia

This is so big! Every wiki which wikia leaves should know about this, it will save hundreds of hours! I worked on it for months, AND THE SOLUTION IS SO EASY! (thanks to otherworldbob) I also posted this on the recent fork of this site, monaco wiki, but I find it will save editors so much time, I need to post it here too.

In the <gallery> tags on wikia, you don't need image: or file: how can I do this on my wiki?

For example on wikia this works, on regular mediawiki it does not:

SOLUTION which works!:

In: \includes\parser\Parser.php

Change: $tp = Title::newFromText( $matches[1]/*, NS_FILE*/ );

To: $tp = Title::newFromText( $matches[1], NS_FILE );

Original post: [1]

  —Anno1404 (talkcontribs) Admin.svg 22:11, 3 January 2011 (UTC)

Wikia intentionally broke galleries so things like that would happen on people moving from Wikia. One of the incompatible changes was the File/Image namespace omited. Another incompatible change is that the widths parameter should have the "px" appended to it, but Wikia made it optional, so if you have galery widths="150" you need to change it to widths="150px" in order to work in other wikis. I think only the mass exodus may force them to return the Monaco.
As for AWA - we are against the wikia`s ways of doing business, such as: Applying a new crappy skin with a lots of ads place AND making it mandatory for unregistered visitors DESPITE the massive complaints, Denying the possibility to change the dafault skin for a guests, A lot of prohibitions in their Customization policy preventing us from making the good-looking articles. For example you can`t move the "Recent Wiki Activity" to the left fr the whole wiki, only for yourself. You can not move or block the ads. But this way they are not making the article look good. There are more things prohibited. See Terms of Use. Mainly the are to make sure ads are present and located where the Wikia (NOT you) wants.
If you are tired of this management and their ways of business, then we are here to help with the moving out of there. AWAMember (Talk page, Mail me). 12:31, 6 January 2011 (UTC)

Embrace, extend and extinguish

Embrace, extend and extinguish

Also posted here: Why_we_left#Embrace.2C_extend_and_extinguish

Ciencia Al Poder a fellow Anti Wikia Alliance member and a co-creator of one of the core extensions, LinkSuggest described Wikia as using a Embrace, extend and extinguish strategy to prevent or make it more difficult to take the content of wikia to another wiki hosting provider.[3]

"Embrace, extend and extinguish," also known as "Embrace, extend and exterminate," is a phrase that the U.S. Department of Justice found was used internally by Microsoft to describe its strategy for entering product fields which had widely used and open programming, advancing the programming but applying copyright, and then using those differences to disadvantage its competitors.

Although built on the free and open Mediawiki software, Wikia regularly creates extensions and skins which programming can only work on Wikia. Finding the source coding for Wikia extensions and skins are difficult if not impossible. Unlike Wikipedia, which lists links with all coding for all of its extensions in use, Wikia does not list links to their products.

This forces Wikia editors to remain on Wikia to keep all features that their community has grown accustomed too.

Contacting wikia extension creators

So, since most of the editors who are the most angry about Wikia's new skin are experienced veteran editors with some programming experience, I am wondering if some of the extension creators are disgruntled too? I am interested if there is a memo floating around or some external emails in which Wikia explicitly states that wikia extensions and skins should be intentionally so wikia centric, that it makes it difficult for editors to leave wikia.

I was thinking we could contact these extension creators, all listed here:

Thoughts?   —Anno1404 (talkcontribs) Admin.svg 16:12, 14 January 2011 (UTC)

1) We may contact the creators and ask if they can publish their extensions available for everyone.
2) I still do not fully understand the point of "Embrace, extend and extinguish". Wikia had changed the extensions and now they do not need some parameters for using. Why must wikia publish this extensions? The text states "using those differences to disadvantage its competitors". If you like it or not - this is the way the business is running. A company can and will use its advantages over their competitors. If one doesn`t like it - one if free to go away from this provider.
And what exact inconveniences may be when you are trying to use the content on other sites? It is not a very big problem to add the px yourself. Not working extension? Yes - do you really expect them to work outside wikia?
Nobody forces you to stay on wikia or prevents you from moving. AWAMember 20:03, 14 January 2011 (UTC)
I got a full understanding of the concept when I read the full wikia article. I strongly suggest reading it. I like it a lot.
Mediawiki extensions are built to work on all wikis. See
The skins are the biggest problems, as you know we have an entire shoutwiki site dedicated to figuring out how to make Monaco work on all wikis. It took shoutwiki months to fix monaco.
The way the skin is made specifically for wikia causes a barrier to leaving. Whether intentional or unintentional.   —Anno1404 (talkcontribs) Admin.svg 20:39, 14 January 2011 (UTC)
1)We now have Monaco-port. So the skin should not be the main problem for leaving.
2)...wikia extensions and skins should be intentionally so wikia centric...
Once extension is modified for a particular site, it becomes site-centric. Same with wikia - I do not think they made it to make the leaving more difficult. They have modified it for their site. And of course, you will not find this modification on external hostings. I guess the same will be with SW - a SW-specific extension(s) will be unavailable on other sites and may be a barrier for leaving.
3) What do you want to ask the extensions creators?
AWAMember (Talk page, Mail me). 07:37, 15 January 2011 (UTC)

AWA potentially the wikileaks of Wikia?

I am interested if we could become the wikileaks of Wikia? Maybe setting up a page here asking disgruntled editors to email us at a certain place?

This leads to all sorts of questions,

  1. would shoutwiki allow such a page,
  2. is it very possible wikia would threaten shoutwiki?
  3. Do we need to move the site to create a Wikia wikileaks?
  4. Should we actively search for discontent on wikia and solicit disgruntled editors?

Thoughts?   —Anno1404 (talkcontribs) Admin.svg 16:12, 14 January 2011 (UTC)

We do not need any troubles for Wikia so I guess staying on SW or leaving to a separate host make no difference as they can find us anywhere.
Instead of saying "wikia may be bad for you" let us just help people to move from there.

Shoutwiki may be becoming Wikia

  1. They are asking for money to use a popular skin (money is coming into play, despite the skin being avalible on two other wiki farms and freely avalibale for other wikis)
  2. They gave steward rights to LIMAFOX76 on my stargate site and i think their going to "wikia" me out of it instead of deleting the wiki like I want

If they do I will spam the crap out of them so they get on spam blocklists as well as steer people away from them completely. Escyos 05:26, 5 May 2011 (UTC)

Don't spam the crap out of them. It's unfair to users who like it here. Regarding Monaco, I'm going to say to the staff that there is no chance that anyone will buy Monaco as wikkii and tw have it for free.

Nah, I don't think they're becoming wikia. When they start banning users, that's when they'll become wikia, and that hasn't happened yet.
  —Hockeyben (talkcontribs) Admin.svg 18:04, 6 May 2011 (UTC)

If you want to dispute something (such as one of our Community Support team giving steward rights to someone on your wiki), please do so in a civilized manner and contact us on IRC or via Special:Contact. Going on random talk pages that we don't visit regularly isn't a good way to get your issue resolved, and just makes it seem like you're trying to go out of your way to (bluntly speaking) talk shit about us, which isn't exactly appreciated when our Community Support team would be more than happy to work with you to resolve your issue had you actually come up to them to begin with.
As for money, yes, everything is about money. Hosting a wiki farm is not cheap, despite what you may think. Unlike Wikia who are putting obtrusive ads inside of pages to get their revenue to run the sites, we are using less obtrusive ad placements and we also have far less users, so we need other ways to cover costs. Our premium features system, once we get it fully fleshed out, is the solution to that. --Skizzerz ShoutWiki Staff 19:31, 9 May 2011 (UTC)
Solar Dragon emailed me and said that my site was no longer affiliated with the simpsons one because i spouted some anti-shoutwiki stuff. Looks an awful lot like its becoming the new Wikia. Escyos 05:21, 10 May 2011 (UTC)
You handled this really badly: [4][5] Deleting pages, calling the editor a dick. etc. I note you unfortunately lost your bureaucratic rights also.
Solar dragon is not shoutwiki staff, so you can't attribute what he does to shoutwiki staff.
Also, in my experience Solar is a good editor. Whereas if I recall the arguments with you and UxieLover1994 on the blog were so absurd they bordered on childish.
When the whole world is saying you are the problem, is it the whole world that has a problem, or you?
Shame it had to come to this.  —Anno1404 (talkcontribs) Admin.svg 18:03, 10 May 2011 (UTC)
Escyos, I am just fed up of you blaming ShoutWiki for everything. Staff are allowed to keep Stargate Wiki open as you didn't open a community discussion and it wasn't planned etc. You just moved it yourself to keep yourself happy. I hope Stargate Wiki does well, but all you really did in the split that you didn't handle well was make another competitior. I don't have anything against you or Silver Knight (who got a global block from staff for his behaviour) but I don't like you guys blaming ShoutWiki for all the problems. Sure, they took a while in fixing it but they are not Wikia. They didn't start blocking users for going against ShoutWiki. They blocked users because of their disruptive behaviour to ShoutWiki and their abuse of staff. They are not Wikia, far from it, and they are Wikia's main competitor. ☆The Solar Dragon☆ 18:22, 10 May 2011 (UTC)

Kinda funny, Wikia is now the only wikifarm without Monaco. Shoutwiki, Tropicalwikis, and Wikkii all have Monaco. I think one of the reasons SW asks for cash for the Monaco skin is that it's alot nicer than the Monaco-port version. All the old themes are saved, the latest activity in the sidebar is also saved. --

Wikia trying to censor

Hi, I want to share with you a funny thing.

I created a week ago a blog page on community wikia [6] about Wikia breaking search suggestions in monobook. I have to admit that I was probably too harsh on that blog, so I wasn't surprised to have a message [7] from Sarah Manley suggesting to move on to another site that better fits me, and asking for an online chat to talk (?). I replied her [8] 17 minutes after her comment, but I didn't receive any other message.

No more notices until 3 days after, when I posted this comment on a forum page about ads on Wikia and why Wikia misteriously keep redirecting you to the main page when you delete any page [9]. Then I received another message from Sarah [10], this time asking me to take a break from participating in community central discussions.

I though she was upset because of the blog page, but if you see when she post messages on my talk page, and the messages itself, it seems she was upset that I posted publicly that Wikia forces a redirect after deletion to force the admins to see the ads on main page.

This is clearly Wikia trying to censor those comments that weren't disrespectful with the community team. --Ciencia Al Poder 15:57, 14 May 2011 (UTC)

Edit blocked by spam filter

Ok obviously this has nothing to do with anything important, but...anyway I tried to edit the main page to remove the 'template:' prefix from the nav template at the top and the underscores from a link, and it told me my edit was blocked by the spam filter because of the blacklisted external link 'mywikibiz[dot]com'. (And now it's blocking this edit because of that text...) Now I wasn't putting that link on the page, it doesn't seem to be on the lines I was trying to edit, and I didn't even realise it was anywhere on the page, so what's the deal? Llwy-ar-lawr (talk) 15:59, 25 February 2014 (UTC)

Also, why is there no 'new section' button on talk pages in this skin like there is with every other skin I've had experience with? Llwy-ar-lawr (talk) 16:08, 25 February 2014 (UTC)
...ok fine, I see the blacklisted link is on the page somewhere - which begs two questions: a) why is the filter blocking any edits made above that text (seems to be what it's doing), and b) why is it blacklisted if it's listed here as a wiki host? Llwy-ar-lawr (talk) 16:16, 25 February 2014 (UTC)
The blacklist comes from Shoutwiki. maybe there was some spam going on for that hosting on shoutwiki and they decided to blacklist it. Anyway, I see that it's going to delete a lot of pages and restrict account creation, and all pages are in a single wiki, so I guess it's not even suitable for most people looking for a wiki hosting, so I'm going to remove it. --Ciencia Al Poder (talk) 20:36, 26 February 2014 (UTC)
Well, if the spam filter no longer blocks it, we may keep it listed here. --Ciencia Al Poder (talk) 20:45, 26 February 2014 (UTC)
Probably a good idea to remove it for those reasons, yes, and one might also note that their recent changes are full of spam so it doesn't look to me like a whole lot of useful stuff is going on there. Llwy-ar-lawr (talk) 01:24, 28 February 2014 (UTC)
Agreed. Done, --Ciencia Al Poder (talk) 18:20, 28 February 2014 (UTC)

Interwiki templates on Inciclopedia

Not sure where to put this but anyway, this seems to have happened. The template for making English interwiki links (but not the other ones, weirdly enough) has been deleted because it violated the terms of service I think, and apparently it's my fault or something because I changed how the links were done... I don't know really. I'm sorry if I got Inciclopedia in trouble, maybe you should consider moving now since they've gone and messed stuff up? Llwy-ar-lawr (talk) 22:35, 13 March 2014 (UTC)

Seriously, WTF happened there? I created that template [11] and your changes made all of them to be red links. --Ciencia Al Poder (talk) 15:47, 14 March 2014 (UTC)
I did not make anything a red link. Dark delegation deleted it which made it a red link. Before that I had changed the code so that it used a real interwiki link rather than an external link, but it began with cy: and then had the language prefix. I did this so that using these interwiki templates would have the same effect on the google rank of the sites that regular interwiki links had. Llwy-ar-lawr (talk) 18:48, 14 March 2014 (UTC)
Btw this is what really happened. The Welsh interwiki prefix has now been removed by wikia, causing the templates to break, presumably because of its usage in those templates. Llwy-ar-lawr (talk) 02:58, 16 March 2014 (UTC)

A fresh dump can only be requested by a sysop of the wiki. Otherwise, the dump may be several months old and won't contain the most recent edits. Shoutwiki staff can download the dump, but not request a new one. --Ciencia Al Poder (talk) 17:54, 18 March 2018 (UTC)

Wikia is dying

Removing Monobook will probably be the last thing Wikia does before going bankrupt and being acquired by Wikihow (or another for-profit that owns MediaWiki sites and manages them properly). I don't think Wikia Inc. will survive into 2019. They're using GDPR (and all the "we have a new privacy policy"-related spam email) as an excuse to completely remove a beloved skin instead of replacing it with Vector, Bluesky, or another skin that would be much better than both Monobook and Oasis. AOTCP69zhere (talk) 22:34, 25 May 2018 (UTC)

Hopefully this is somewhat true, though I doubt they will go bankrupt. --Raltseye (talk) 01:16, 26 May 2018 (UTC)

The "Wikia-Killer"

Most users of this wiki would probably be interested in this proposal on MetaWikimedia. I think that if the WMF launched their own hosting service, almost every wiki on FANDUMB would jump the ship, causing Wikia Inc. to eventually go bankrupt.. AOTCP69zhere (talk) 21:25, 27 May 2018 (UTC)

I doubt this would go anywhere. That would turn it into a Wikia 2 site. Also remember J. Wales, the founder of Wikipedia, is also the founder of Wikia. He won't let that happen. --Ciencia Al Poder (talk) 21:37, 27 May 2018 (UTC)

Wikia committing SEO suicide AOTCP69zhere (talk) 05:12, 19 August 2018 (UTC)

That's not SEO suicide. But of course, forked wikis will be more than happy now that the word "wiki" won't be part of the domain name of wikia, which would increase relative SEO ranking of those domains. --Ciencia Al Poder (talk) 19:45, 20 August 2018 (UTC)

Wikia's New "TV Community Builder"

Alright, not sure if this is the right place to be posting this, but here goes…

I've been using Wikia since 2014, having contributed to many different wikis, and have founded or am an admin on a good handful of them. While I've tried to work around the many unfavorable changes their staff have placed upon the community over time, I think I'm about ready to abandon the place for good.

I was recently contacted by a staff member on one of the wikis I manage, and it seems they've been working on an entirely new format that I assume they'll eventually force upon everyone in time. They’ve linked two different wikis now using this format in the discussion, and while they say its a work in progress, they’ve made it clear that any sort of meaningful customization will no longer be possible -

I'm not really sure how to respond, if at all. After reading this, I don’t see any incentive for me to continue contributing. To make matters worse, I’ve also recently seen forum posts by users who said their entire wikis were deleted, and later confirmed by staff due to inactivity (and I’m not talking about years, but after only a month or two with no edits). I make edits sporadically to all the wikis I run, and I’m now finding myself making small edits to avoid this happening.

So… I guess I’m looking for help? Advice? I’m not sure, really. I’ve made a couple ShoutWikis in the past, but I’d like to start migrating a few of the ones on Wikia to here. Is that feasible (and is there a limit to how many wikis you can create over here)?

Hathomirr (talk) 04:25, 18 September 2018 (UTC)

Oh dear, that is bad. Doesn't even seem to have a source editor of any kind...Anyway, ShoutWiki limits your wiki creation to 5 sadly, but you can use Miraheze and Referata to migrate the others if you need the extra space (IMO Miraheze is better than ShoutWiki anyway). The fact that Wikia is deleting inactive wikis is troubling, I run a fairly inactive wiki based off an obscure Netflix series which doesn't pull in much attention outside of shitposting anons, so I got to stay extra diligent I guess. Ugh. Good luck with your migration, dude.--Jordan D (talk) 04:42, 18 September 2018 (UTC)
All in attempt to make the site more mobile-friendly, which I never understood. I'm pretty sure most people who use Wikia on their phones only use it to browse, not make significant edits.
Anyway, thanks for the insight. The wiki limit is certainly an issue, but I guess I'll have to spread them across multiple hosting sites like you mentioned (I have at least 5 wikis that I absolutely must preserve, with another couple up for consideration). A couple more questions then - Does Miraheze have a creation limit as well? Also, I already have the XML data from the wikis, but do you know if there's any way to do a mass backup of all the images on them (I've taken so many screenshots and would really prefer not to loose them all suddenly)? And if I have any more questions in the future, is there a preferred place to ask them? Thanks.
Hathomirr (talk)
Interesting. This looks like they're continuing the path of "Lucy"
Posting this at community central's forum, and mentioning also the "Lucy" experiment would probably cause a lot of drama to those "power users" that still don't want to abandon FANDOOM :) --Ciencia Al Poder (talk) 19:14, 18 September 2018 (UTC)

Wikia and Gamepedia

Wikia now owns Curse. There's a lot of discussion about this on some of the affected wikis that forked from wikia to Gamepedia.

One of them was Encyclopedia Gamia, was forked in August. But interestingly, Wikia staff is going to redirect the wikia site to the Gamepedia one. This is very surprising. --Ciencia Al Poder (talk) 21:16, 20 December 2018 (UTC)

I know nothing significant has happened just yet, but I'm concerned about potential changes that were implied to be coming to Gamepedia this next year. I migrated a wiki there shortly before the initial announcement of the merge, and I've been down on motivation to continue putting in further contributions out of fear that the place will go the same route as Fandom. Does anyone have any additional information regarding this that might put my worries to rest, or should I plan to migrate the wiki yet again? - Hathomirr (talk) 18:15, 5 December 2019 (UTC)

I tried using my Gmail. No email confirmation received after five minutes. Unless they block T-mobile IPs like Wikipedia does. I have T-mobile internet. --YuichiArima (talk) 14:56, 16 September 2022 (UTC)

Ok, this may be an issue on their end. It doesn't matter which internet provider you use: mails are sent between mail servers. You connect to gmail to read your mails. They aren't pushed directly to your phone/mail program --Ciencia Al Poder (talk) 09:44, 17 September 2022 (UTC)

OK. It finally worked for my gmail. Thx. --YuichiArima (talk) 19:27, 17 September 2022 (UTC)

Now, I am getting a connection timed out. --YuichiArima (talk) 20:15, 17 September 2022 (UTC)

Hey chaps, just learned about AWA's existence (and yeah the icon looks cool for symmetry but also resembles "AWP"). How did AWA's purpose change anyways? And I guess if people really wanted to move, they need a ton of technicians? --SUPER-TANK (talk) 14:53, 30 October 2023 (UTC)

There are different wiki hosting options. If someone doesn't know much about how webservers work, I'd recommend using another wiki farm, or if your wiki may have synergies or some relation with an existing self-hosted independent wiki, you can also try contacting them. If you have Discord, there's a small team of users that may help exporting the data of your wiki and setting it up on an independent hosting. Here's an invite: --Ciencia Al Poder (talk) 16:27, 30 October 2023 (UTC)

Oh well, I don't feel the need to actually move the wiki as of now (Fandom barely affects it, I doubt if they could even profit from intervening on mine, but we'll see). Porting it isn't a problem. Just the lack of maintenance means there's not even any urgency. Speaking of discord, I guess AWA doesn't have its own (the one you've linked is just there for tech purposes)? Would have been nice to talk about given the load times and all elsewhere.--SUPER-TANK (talk) 20:15, 30 October 2023 (UTC)

Nope, there's no Discord for AWA. This project is very small and dormant --Ciencia Al Poder (talk) 21:26, 30 October 2023 (UTC)
